About Me
-
Describe Yourself:When he was a senior in college, Dean Koontz won an Atlantic Monthly fiction competition and has been writing ever since. His books are published in 38 languages. He has sold 325,000,000 copies, a figure that currently increases by more than 17 million copies per year.
Ten of his novels have risen to number one on the New York Times hardcover bestseller list (ONE DOOR AWAY FROM HEAVEN, FROM THE CORNER OF HIS EYE, MIDNIGHT, COLD FIRE, THE BAD PLACE, HIDEAWAY, DRAGON TEARS, INTENSITY, SOLE SURVIVOR and THE HUSBAND), making him one of only a dozen writers ever to have achieved that milestone. Fourteen of his books have risen to the number one position in paperback. His books have also been major bestsellers in countries as diverse as Japan and Sweden.
The New York Times has called his writing "psychologically complex, masterly and satisfying." The New Orleans Times-Picayune said Koontz is, "at times lyrical without ever being naive or romantic. [He creates] a grotesque world, much like that of Flannery O'Conner or Walker Percy ... scary, worthwhile reading." Rolling Stone has hailed him as "America's most popular suspense novelist."
Dean Koontz was born and raised in Pennsylvania. He graduated from Shippensburg State College (now Shippensburg University), and his first job after graduation was with the Appalachian Poverty Program, where he was expected to counsel and tutor underprivileged children on a one-to-one basis. His first day on the job, he discovered that the previous occupier of his position had been beaten up by the very kids he had been trying to help and had landed in the hospital for several weeks. The following year was filled with challenge but also tension, and Koontz was more highly motivated than ever to build a career as a writer. He wrote nights and weekends, which he continued to do after leaving the poverty program and going to work as an English teacher in a suburban school district outside Harrisburg. After a year and a half in that position, his wife, Gerda, made him an offer he couldn't refuse: "I'll support you for five years," she said, "and if you can't make it as a writer in that time, you'll never make it." By the end of those five years, Gerda had quit her job to run the business end of her husband's writing career.
Dean and Gerda Koontz along with the enduring spirit of their golden retriever, Trixie, live in southern California.

By the way, you are one of my favorite authors! I read an old book of yours-The Funhouse. It really shows how truly talented you are! Obviously you are talented, but I can not figure out how you wrote that book the way you did!

Greetings Again,
Sorry, my letter was sent before I was finished with it. I'd like to ask you if you could help guide me in the right directions with poetry, Children's Book, one book, I'm writing about myself. I've had some unusual events happened to me.
I could use some of your expert ideas in helping me get my book going well. My book is listed with Barnes&Nobles, Waldenbooks, Book-A-Million, Amazon, etc. Some in which do carry my book in their store. I'm having new events coming up in June.
I'm looking forward to these events. I know you're asked a lot of these same questions by other authors. I don't blame them, cause I'm asking the same ones basically. I've worked hard the past years. I would love to see my work everywhere.
And see people enjoying what they're reading. I'm more non-fiction writer. My poetry is full of emotions of the heart and soul. Real love, pain, disappointments etc. May I ask you for some advice from you?
How and what should I do to make my work a success?
Who is the best Publishing Company can I repersent my work to? I don't want you to give yourself away or anything. I need a push into the right direction where and who to promote my work with. To many people out there, who would love to take work from an author and run with it.
I'm sorry for the long letter, I didn't intend for it to be this long. Please forgive me. I also would like to give you my personal e-mail address just in case we lose each other here. Hope you don't mind me doing this.
Thank-you for your time and interests in otherauthors trying to get their feet off the ground like me. God bless!

Greetings,
I know you've heard this before by other readers and writer's. But, you're one of the best authors I've known thus far. Writing requires so much time to do. Keep your mind on your subject and be where you are free to think without interuption.
I'm a poet, I guess you already know rhis about me. By book " By The Servant's Hand" was released last April. Since then, I've been doing a lot of signing event's in N.C. I enjoy reading your books when

I have a question for you. Please know that I understand if you do not have the time to answer.
I have read several of your books. (By the way, you are my sister's all time favorite author!).
My question is this: I have noticed that you do not write like the other authors, in that you appear to write out of genre' if you will. I wrote a novel. The problem I believe is that this novel does not fall into any real genre' category other than "general fiction." It is dark, it is frightening, and it has a message. However, it does not fall under "Horror." How were you able to sell books in the beginning when no one knew who you were? What do you think makes them take a chance on a new writer?
Thank you so much.
Sharon
